Statement by the Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan on the Situation in Egypt

TOKYO, Japan, November 25, 2011/African Press Organization (APO)/ -- Japan is deeply concerned about many deaths and injuries in the series of demonstrations which started on November 18 in Egypt, and expressed condolences to the deceased and their families. Japan appeals the all parties concerned to exercise maximum restraint and to act responsibly without using violence.

Japan hopes that the situation will quickly become calm and that the scheduled parliamentary elections will take place in a just and peaceful manner. It is an important step that a new political roadmap including the earlier presidential election was announced on November 22, and Japan hopes the steady progress of the reform process.

Japan has been supporting a number of reforms to realize the transition to a democratic system in Egypt after the political change in February, and will continue its assistance to Egypt's efforts, including support to the upcoming elections.
