Ohakim’s Conscience Fever

By Odimegwu Onwumere

On Saturday, July 25th 2009, the Imo State governor, Mr. Ikedi Ohakim, formally left the Progressive People's Alliance (PPA) (the party whose ticket he became governor) and pitched his tent with the ruling People's Democratic Party (PDP). His defection would make the PDP-controlled states risen to 29. Without doubt, this is the elevation of political philandrous in Nigeria. Though, some of us were not aghast because we know Ikedi as one politician of no-integrity in Nigeria. Does he care for the future of our democracy or for the future of his political career? Ikedi has sacrificed decency on the altar of aspiration. We now understand his political chicanery: Where decency and integrity and patriotism have gone on errand. Unequivocally, Imo State was the heart and soul of Igbo nation. In the eyes of many Nigerians, this was a place from where not even one saboteur emerged during the civil war. But today, that priceless morality is being destroyed with deceitful leaderships.

Ohakim's defection, it is obvious, another invasion of Igboland. One might ask, what about the case of Governor Mal Isa Yuguda, the Bauchi State governor who defected from the ANPP to the PDP and is now calling for the head of his deputy, Mr. Mohammed Gadi because the later refused to play the game of political prostitution with him. Ohakim is a political opportunist. Ohakim has done what he likes with no regards to constituent's opinion? A lot of people now pity the people of Imo State. They are asking, what was Ohakim's “past immediate profession” before now? They say a leopard does not change its spots.

I have not stopped laughing and many of my neighbours now misconstrued me for a semi-demented person since Ohakim defected from the PPA that made him a governor to the PDP that once made him a goon. But since then, instead Ohakim would recline into his shelve and allow that defection buffoonery he has exhibited for social-democrats to laugh at, he rushed to the media to report the 'hand' that fed him assuming to choke his throat.

Ohakim, in a letter made available to Aso Rock and Men of SSS and media reportedly said that “Kalu after my life”. This exaggeration of Ohakim shows how a guilty-minded man can run in a lorn-place without anything pursuing him; I think Ohakim is being hounded by his own demon. Ohakim's chicanery on the personality of Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu by saying that Kalu is after his life is uncalled for and buttresses the mind of a betrayer and a traitor.

For what would Kalu be after the life of King Rehoboam born in Umunnuma, Okohia, Osuh-Owerre, Isli-Ala Mbano L.G.A, Imo State ? Ohakim will never stop surprising people; he will not stop trying to be relevant through a mirage.

I think this Ohakim is well endowed with deceiving tactics and antics. Was there no land palaver between him and his neighbouring Ezihe people in his home town? Why does he not recognize his town's Royal Highness, Eze Ebere Nwaeme, Odu 1 of Osu-owere, but recognizes the Umunchi duke? Ohakim should stop playing cleverness.

This was how he played cleverness when he was Commissioner under Chief Evan(s) Enwerem (of blessed memory) that his Osu-Owerre people couldn't get as many electricity-transformers they demanded from the state government then. (Perhaps, Ohakim got them and buried them in the soil).

No one would tell me that Ohakim isn't sick of conscience fever and I will agree. Is his government not a divisive one? Where he dethrones kings in his Mbano clan for wanton reasons [an example is HRH Eze Oliver Ohanwe, Obi 1 of Ishi-Ama]. I don't think that anyone is after Ohakim's life, as he alleged, but I think he is expressing a saying that a man dies in his heart before he dies naturally. Ohakim should know that as divorce destroys generation so political-party prostitutes destroy democracy.
