ONE of the oldest sports clubs in this country, Asaba Sports Club, founded in 1863 has been brought down by bulldozers.

Also affected in the destruction was one of the courts named after the incumbent Governor of Delta State, Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan.

Governor Uduaghan had few years ago, doled out  N10 million to the management of the club to enable the resuscitation of the premier club.

Vanguard Sports gathered that somebody who was laying claim to the ownership of the land where the club is located allegedly brought the bulldozers in company of some policemen to pull down the building and the two existing lawn tennis courts in the early hours of Saturday.

Some members who turned out for their early morning tennis game were shocked to the marrow to find out that the courts, the club house as well as the generator house had been destroyed.

President of the Club, Mr. Ben Anazia (Snr) told newsmen that 'this is unbelievable because I cannot fathom how somebody can do this to the club. Some members who came for their morning tennis called up on phone and when I raced down here I met the club in ruins.

Well, we have reported to the police and I am appealing that justice be done. As you can see even the court named after His Excellency, Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan was not spared in the orgy of destruction'.
