Senate Unveils Principal Officers.... Ndoma-Egba Is Majority Leader

ABUJA, June 29, (THEWILL) - The Senate today unveiled its body of principal officers though some level of controversy dogged the emergence of the Senate Minority Leader.

The list read on the floor by President of the Senate confirmed Senator Victor Ndoma Egba (PDP, Cross River) as Senate Leader, while Sen. Bello Hayatu Gwarzo, (PDP, Kano) is the new Majority Whip just as Sen. Hosea Ayoola Agboola, a first timer was picked as Deputy Majority Whip (PDP), being the sole PDP member from South West.

The Senate is however waiting for the North East caucus to forward its choice for the Deputy Majority Leader slot. The contest is between ex-Majority leader in the House of Representatives, Senator Abdul Ningi (PDP, Bauchi) and former Minority Leader in the House of Representatives, Senator Ali Ndume (PDP, Borno). Both are first term senators.

But in a twist of fate the North East PDP Senate caucus has rejected the position of the Deputy Majority Leader.

Other principal officers include announced today include; Sen. George Akume (ACN, Benue), Minority Leader; Sen. Ganiyu Olanrewaju Solomon (ACN, Lagos), Minority whip; Sen. Ahmed Rufai Sani (ANPP, Zamfara), Deputy Minority leader; while Sen. Abu Ibrahim (CPC, Niger) emerged Deputy Minority Whip.

However, in a letter to the President of the Senate which was read in plenary, Sen. Chris Ngige (Anambra North) objected to the nomination of Minority Leader.

He stated that the issue of the nomination is still mired in serious controversy and urged the Senate President to use his good offices to look into the matter.
