LAGOS, April 17, (THEWILL) – The candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Goodluck Jonathan pulled a huge upset in Lagos in the Presidential election defeating the candidate of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) and other rivals in the wards of Lagos State Governor Babatunde Raji Fashola (SAN) and ACN leader Asiwaju Ahmed Tinubu.

The PDP had tried unsuccessfully to beat Tinubu and Fashola in their wards in previous elections in the state since 1999.

From the results obtained in Lagos, Tinubu marginally won his polling unit by 26 votes, while other polling units in his neighbourhood were swept by the ruling PDP contrary to the pre-election thinking that the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) would win the state in a landslide for its presidential candidate, Malam Nuhu Ribadu.

At Fashola’s polling unit 001 in Itolo area of Surulere, Jonathan had majority votes of 141 compared with 77 votes, which the ACN won in the polling unit. But surprisingly Presidential Candidate of the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), General Muhammadu Buhari came second in Fashola’s polling unit with 90 votes.

In all other polling units in Fashola’s Ward G3, President Jonathan had a good lead with Buhari’s CPC maintaining second position in the ward while Ribadu’s ACN coming behind the duo in a contest, which analysts believed, would be won by the ACN considering the party’s dominance and influence in the South West.

At Polling Unit 002 in Ward G3, PDP had 64 votes compared with 30 votes and 8 votes respectively won by Buhari’s CPC and Ribadu’s ACN. The same trend was maintained at Polling Unit 003 where PDP had popular votes of 103; CPC had 88; and ACN only got 26 votes.

Also at Polling 004, PDP got majority votes of 152; CPC had 63 and ACN went home with just 25 while at Polling Unit 005, PDP maintained lead with 142; CPC followed with 68 votes and ACN came behind with just 31.

But at his polling unit in Alausa, Tinubu, marginally won with 166 votes while the PDP got 140 votes and CPC had meagre votes of 26, but other polling units around Tinubu’s polling units were won by Jonathan’s ruling PDP.

In polling unit 008, ACN got 72 votes, CPC got 22 votes, and PDP got 123 votes. In polling unit 003, PDP polled 64 votes, ACN polled 31 votes, and CPC polled 19. In polling unit 036, ACN polled 44 votes, CPC polled 21 votes, and PDP polled 87.

In polling unit 005, ACN polled 18 votes, CPC polled 31 votes, and PDP polled 99 votes. In polling unit 041, ACN polled 37 votes, CPC polled 21 votes, and PDP polled 129 votes. In polling unit 009, ACN polled 26 votes, CPC polled 21 votes, and PDP polled 99 votes.

In another polling unit at Ikeja bus stop, ACN polled 49 votes, CPC polled 2 votes, and PDP polled 96 votes. The PDP’s lead in some parts of the state sparked stern debate and argument among the masses, who came to the polling units to check election results.

At the polling units THEWILL visited today, a protracted argument ensued in the midst of Lagos residents, who flooded polling units after the elections to check the results.
