Mimiko to Jonathan: You must give us credible election in 2011

Ondo State Governor, Dr Olusegun Mimiko at the weekend challenged President Goodluck Jonathan to live up to his promise of conducting a free and credible election in the country next year.

Specifically, Dr Mimiko, who described Jonathan as a child of destiny in respect of his political antecedent while saying that God has produced him for a special reason urged him not to fail the nation at the 2011 elections saying that his action and inactions would either make or mar the nation.

The Governor stated this at the Government House Akure while playing host to the Director General of Goodluck/ Sambo Campaign Organisation, Dr Dalhatu Taffida and members of the organization.

According to him, the people of Ondo State were committed to genuine democratic principles by which their leaders would emerge through popular votes and mass participation in the electoral process.

His words: “We in Ondo State are determined to make sure that credible elections are conducted in this country. This will definitely portray the image of our great country in a positive way before the international community. Yesterday, I was with the Vice president in Abuja at the launch of the NUJ Insurance Scheme and he promised that the present administration will conduct credible election next year. We must all support the federal government to make the promise come into reality.”

Governor, however, commended President Jonathan for appointing Prof Attairu Jega as the chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and for ensuring fairness and justice in the governorship petition involving Dr Kayode Fayemi and Mr. Segun Oni. He noted that his administration would continue to support federal government in its policies aimed at ensuring socio-economic transformation of the country

 
Earlier in his speech, the Director General of the Organisation, Dr Dalhatu Taffida said they were in Ondo State, being the 18th State to be visited by the campaign organisation in the country to solicit support for the candidacy of President Goodluck Jonathan and Vice President Namadi Sambo in the next year's primaries and general election.

According to him, their visits to States were carried out irrespective of political affiliation of the State government. He however appreciated Governor Mimiko for his leadership qualities as a politician of repute and for postponing his engagement for the purpose of receiving them at the Government House.
