Art Intimates Life in Academy Doc Series
Beverly Hills, CA – “Tell Them Anything You Want: A Portrait of Maurice Sendak” and “The Beaches of Agnès” will screen as the next installment in the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences' 29th annual “Contemporary Documentaries” series on Wednesday, November 3, at 7 p.m. at the Linwood Dunn Theater in Hollywood. Admission to all screenings in the series is free.
In “Tell Them Anything You Want: A Portrait of Maurice Sendak,” directors Lance Bangs and Spike Jonze paint a poignant portrait of children's writer and illustrator Maurice Sendak. From early sketches to his most celebrated book, Where the Wild Things Are, the short film reveals the provocative imagination that has spawned creative works for more than 50 years. “Tell Them Anything You Want” was produced by Perry Moore, Hunter Hill, Allison Sarofim and Vincent Landay. Bangs will be present to take questions from the audience following the screening.
Directed and produced by Agnès Varda, “The Beaches of Agnès” is a richly cinematic self-portrait that reflects on art, life and the movies. The documentary feature touches on everything from the feminist movement to the Black Panthers to the films of Varda's husband, Jacques Demy, to the birth of the French New Wave.
The 29th annual “Contemporary Documentaries” series continues through November 17, showcasing feature-length and short documentaries drawn from the 2009 Academy Award® nominations, including the winners, as well as other important and innovative films considered by the Academy that year.
All films will screen at the Linwood Dunn Theater at the Academy's Pickford Center for Motion Picture Study on Wednesdays at 7 p.m. Doors open at 6 p.m. All seating is unreserved. The filmmakers will be present at screenings whenever possible.
