The image of a dog helping ducklings cross a gutter is far more than a touching moment it is a powerful lesson for individuals, communities, and society as a whole. It reminds us that genuine service does not require wealth, status, or political office. What matters most is a willing heart. One of the greatest challenges confronting the world today is selfishness, driven by greed. This destructive attitude often manifests in corruption, abuse of public trust, and the pursuit of personal interests at the expense of the common good. It has become so entrenched that some people form political groups and movements, not necessarily to serve the people, but to advance personal ambitions. When they lose elections or political contests, they often resort to endless protests and litigation. This raises an important question: Are they truly fighting for the masses, or are they fighting for themselves?

If the genuine objective is to improve the lives of the people, there are countless ways to serve outside political office. Community development, charity, education, advocacy, youth empowerment, and humanitarian service are all meaningful avenues for making a positive impact. Leadership is not confined to holding public office; it is defined by service and sacrifice.

As the American civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. wisely said:

"Life's most persistent and urgent question is, 'What are you doing for others?'"

Similarly, Mahatma Gandhi reminded the world:
"The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others."

For Muslims, the teachings of Islam reinforce this principle. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said:

"The best of people are those who are most beneficial to others."

The Qur'an also encourages righteousness and cooperation:

"Help one another in righteousness and piety, but do not help one another in sin and transgression." (Qur'an 5:2)

The dog did not ask which tribe, religion, or political party the ducklings belonged to before offering help. It simply acted out of instinctive compassion. Ironically, human beings who have been blessed with reason, conscience, and moral guidance sometimes fail to demonstrate the same level of kindness and selflessness. The lesson is simple but profound: true greatness is measured not by the position we occupy, but by the lives we touch. A society flourishes when its people place service above selfishness and integrity above greed. May Almighty Allah guide our leaders and citizens to embrace selfless service, strengthen justice, eradicate corruption, and always protect and uplift the masses. Ameen.
