Imo 2027: Owerri Zonal Indigenes In Malaysia Push for Power Shift To Owerri Zone
The Owerri Zonal Welfare Union of Malaysia (OZWUM) has joined the growing calls for the next governor of Imo State to emerge from the Owerri Senatorial District, citing historical marginalisation and the need for political equity.
Led by its Chairman, High Chief, Dr, Sir, Vincent Uchenna Anyanwu (KSM), the Kuala Lumpur-based socio-cultural organisation, comprising Nigerian diaspora from the Owerri zone, said the push for an Owerri governor is anchored on fairness. The group noted that the last opportunity for the zone was cut short with the removal of Emeka Ihedioha, after only seven months in office.

Tracing the imbalance, High Chief, Dr, Sir, Vincent Uchenna Anyanwu (KSM) explained that since Nigeria’s return to democracy in 1999, the Orlu zone (Imo West) has held power for over 24 years through Achike Udenwa, Rochas Okorocha and incumbent Hope Uzodimma, while Okigwe zone (Imo North) held a single four-year term under Ikedi Ohakim. In contrast, Owerri zone (Imo East) has held the seat for only seven months since 1999. He attributed the dominance to Orlu’s demographic advantage, with 12 of the state’s 27 Local Government Areas, compared to 9 for Owerri and 6 for Okigwe.
The union said the imbalance would be corrected by the Imo Charter of Equity, instituted by the Imo State Elders Council and backed by Governor Uzodimma, which mandates that power should rotate to Owerri zone after the expiration of the incumbent’s tenure.
Beyond politics, OZWUM said it remains committed to development at home and welfare abroad. According to the union, it serves as a safety net for Owerri indigenes in Malaysia through emergency support, legal and immigration assistance, conflict mediation and cultural preservation, while mobilising resources to fund community projects, healthcare interventions and educational scholarships in Imo State.
