Santi Cazorla Announces Retirement After Illustrious Football Career
Former Spain international and Arsenal midfielder Santi Cazorla has officially retired from professional football at the age of 41, bringing the curtain down on a remarkable career that spanned more than two decades.
The experienced playmaker made the announcement on Thursday, expressing gratitude for the journey that saw him represent some of Europe's top clubs and achieve success for both club and country.
Cazorla ended his playing career with his hometown club, Real Oviedo, where he played an important role in helping the team earn promotion to La Liga in 2025.
His final season was spent competing in Spain's top division, marking an emotional conclusion to a career that began in Oviedo's youth academy.
During his career, Cazorla featured for Villarreal, Recreativo, Malaga and Arsenal, where he became a fan favourite after joining the Premier League club in 2012.
He won two FA Cups with the Gunners and was widely admired for his creativity, vision and technical brilliance.
On the international stage, the midfielder enjoyed major success with Spain, helping the country win the UEFA European Championship in 2008 and again in 2012.
Injury prevented him from being part of Spain's victorious 2010 FIFA World Cup squad, despite being one of the nation's most gifted players.
After leaving Arsenal, Cazorla revived his career with Villarreal before moving to Qatar to play for Al Sadd. He later returned to Real Oviedo, accepting a modest salary and donating his image rights to support the club's development.
Real Oviedo praised Cazorla for his loyalty and generosity, describing his impact on and off the pitch as unforgettable.
The club also expressed its desire to keep him involved in any capacity, ensuring his connection with the team continues beyond his playing days.
