I’ll Abolish JAMB, Scrap NYSC If I Become Nigeria’s President— Sowore Vows
The presidential candidate of the African Action Congress for the 2027 general election, Omoyele Sowore, has vowed to abolish the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) and scrap the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) if elected president.
Sowore, who took to his social media handles on Wednesday, said admissions into Nigerian tertiary institutions should be handled directly by the institutions through a transparent and merit-based process, rather than by a central examination body.
“JAMB will be abolished. Admission into tertiary institutions should be determined by the institutions themselves under a transparent, merit-based system, not by another layer of bureaucracy,” he stated.
The AAC presidential flag-bearer also proposed replacing the existing NYSC scheme with what he described as a two-year voluntary National Job Corps aimed at addressing youth unemployment and improving access to career opportunities.
According to him, “The National Youth Service Corps, in its current form, will be scrapped. In its place, we will establish a two-year, voluntary National Job Corps that guarantees participants meaningful employment, practical skills, entrepreneurship support, and pathways into permanent careers.”
He argued that compulsory national service no longer meets the needs of young Nigerians, insisting that government should instead focus on creating jobs and expanding opportunities.
“Nigeria's young people do not need more compulsory schemes. They need opportunities, jobs, skills, and the freedom to choose their future,” Sowore said.
