Kylian Mbappe produced another memorable performance as France defeated Sweden 3-0 on Tuesday to book their place in the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Real Madrid forward was the standout player at MetLife Stadium, scoring twice as Didier Deschamps' side comfortably overcame the Swedes to continue their pursuit of a third World Cup title.

France broke the deadlock just before halftime after Mbappe combined brilliantly with Ousmane Dembele. The captain skipped past his marker before firing a clinical finish beyond Sweden goalkeeper Jacob Widell Zetterstrom to hand Les Bleus a deserved lead heading into the break.

The goal saw Mbappe make World Cup history by becoming the highest-scoring player in knockout matches. His strike moved him ahead of Brazilian legends Leonidas and Ronaldo, who had previously shared the record with eight goals in the tournament's knockout rounds.

France maintained complete control after the restart and doubled their advantage when Bradley Barcola found the back of the net following another well-worked attacking move.

Mbappe then sealed the convincing victory midway through the second half. Michael Olise supplied an inch-perfect through ball, allowing the French star to calmly slot his effort into the far corner for his second goal of the evening.

The brace also strengthened Mbappe's challenge for the tournament's Golden Boot. He now has six goals in the competition, drawing level with Argentina captain Lionel Messi in the scoring race while moving to within one goal of Messi's overall World Cup tally.

France's convincing victory sets up a Round of 16 showdown against Paraguay, who stunned Germany in the previous knockout round. With Mbappe in sensational form, Les Bleus will head into that clash full of confidence as they continue their quest for World Cup glory.
