The David Umahi Federal University Teaching Hospital, Uburu, Ebonyi state, is playing host to the 114th Regular quarterly Meeting of the Committee of CMDs and MDs of Tertiary hospitals in Nigeria.

The meeting brings together healthcare leaders from across the country to deliberate on issues affecting healthcare delivery and hospital management in Nigeria.

The delegation led by its Chairman, Prof. Sa'ad Ahmed on arrival paid a courtesy visit to the body of traditional rulers (the Ezes-in-Council) of Uburu, at the palace of Eze Adu the third of Uburu autonomous community, HRH Eze Laz Umahi.

Addressing the Royal fathers, Ahmed explained that the meetings was a strategic forum where CMDs and MDs assess challenges in tertiary healthcare and develop practical solutions to support government’s drive to upgrade infrastructure and service delivery.

He noted that the hosting of the meeting by DUFUTH was significant because it coincided with events marking the end of the tenure of its first Chief Medical Director, Professor Uzoma Maryrose Agwu who he commended for her four years impactful leadership in the health institution and her commitment to medical excellence in general.

He appreciated the royal fathers for their warm reception and for providing the enabling environment for the operation of the hospital.

Welcoming the delegation, Eze Godwin Akpandu of Enu Uburu Autonomous Community, who spoke for the four autonomous communities, said the visit affirmed Uburu’s growing relevance in Nigeria’s medical sector.

He reiterated that the Uburu community's decision to cede land to the Federal Government for the establishment of DUFUTH was to foster relationship built on trust, not transaction.

“Uburu gave you more than land; Uburu gave you trust.

"What you call a hospital, we call our child. A hospital is not a stranger’s project, it is a gift of life to humanity,” he said.

Highlighting the CMDs four years of cordial relationship and steady growth at DUFUTH, the royal father stated that the hospital has performed over 412 complex surgeries and expanded into specialized care including kidney services and plastic surgery. They also praised Professor Agwu for strengthening hospital-community relations which has further positioned the hospital for greater achievements.

While reaffirming the host community’s commitment to peace and partnership with the hospital's management, the monarchs urged the Federal Government and development partners to sustain support for DUFUTH through increased manpower, completion of ongoing projects, and further expansion of healthcare programmes.

They expressed optimism that DUFUTH will rank among West Africa’s leading medical institutions.

In her remark, Professor Agwu attributed DUFUTH’s progress to the professional support and collaborative network of the Committee, stating that shared expertise among CMDs/MDs created the enabling environment for her administration to deliver results.

Day one of the conference featured presentations and interactive sessions to promote collaboration, knowledge sharing and improved health systems. It also witnessed exhibitions by companies and organizations seeking partnerships with federal tertiary hospitals, with platforms for networking, and the exploration of innovative solutions to strengthen healthcare services across the country.
