Ogun University Mourns As Student Killed In Armed Robbery Attack

Authorities at the Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU), Ago-Iwoye, Ogun State, have declared Thursday a lecture-free day following the killing of one of its students during an armed robbery incident in the host community.

The university announced the decision in a statement issued on Thursday by its Deputy Registrar and Head of Corporate Affairs Division, Niyi Oduwole, after the tragic incident that occurred in Ago-Iwoye in the early hours of the day.

According to the statement, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ayodeji Agboola, acting on behalf of the University Senate, directed that all lectures scheduled for Thursday, June 18, 2026, be suspended to allow students mourn their slain colleague.

The statement read, “Following the Incident of armed robbery in Ago-Iwoye township that resulted in the tragic loss of one of our students early this morning, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ayodeji Agboola, on behalf of the University Senate has directed that today, Thursday, 18th June, 2026 be declared a lecture free day,”

The university management expressed condolences to the family of the deceased student and sympathised with the student community over the loss.

It also assured students that it would work closely with security agencies to strengthen security measures and protect lives and property within and around the institution.

“While commiserating with the entire students over the demise of their colleague, the University Management expresses its heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased and assures the students that adequate security measures will be put in place in collaboration with relevant security agencies to ensure safety of lives and property," it said.

The management further appealed to students to remain calm and avoid actions capable of escalating tensions as the institution and security authorities respond to the situation.

“At this critical period, the University Management pledges its support to the students and sympathizes with them over their departed colleague,” the management added.
