Former Governor of Anambra State, Peter Obi, has expressed grief following the passing of Lieutenant General Chikadibia Isaac Obiakor (retd.), who died at the age of 75 in Abuja.

A statement issued by Air Commodore Sani Zakari (retd.) said the retired army general died at an Abuja hospital on Wednesday, May 27, 2026.

The Nigerian Army officer was widely respected as one of Africa’s most accomplished military peacekeepers and strategic commander, having served in several international assignments, including with the United Nations.

Reacting in a statement issued on Thursday, Obi described the late military officer as a patriot who dedicated his life to the service of Nigeria and humanity.

“It is with great sorrow that I share the news of the passing of Lt. Gen. Chikadibia Isaac Obiakor, a respected soldier, patriot, and one of Nigeria’s exceptional international peacekeepers. Gen. Obiakor dedicated himself to our nation with remarkable bravery and integrity, proudly representing Nigeria both domestically and at the United Nations,” Obi stated.

The former Labour Party presidential candidate said he had spoken with the deceased only weeks ago and noted that he referenced him at a public event earlier this week, making the news of his death even more painful.

“Just a few weeks ago, I engaged with him for some information; it’s hard to believe that was our final conversation. I even mentioned him just last Monday at a public event,” he added.

Obi further praised the late general’s commitment to peacekeeping, professionalism and sacrifice, describing him as an inspiration to younger generations of military officers and Nigerians.

“His life was characterised by dedication, sacrifice, and an unwavering commitment to peace and humanity. From the Nigerian military to his participation in global peacekeeping efforts, he exemplified professionalism and integrity, inspiring countless officers and young Nigerians to prioritise service to others,” Obi said.

He extended condolences to the bereaved family, the Nigerian Armed Forces and all Nigerians mourning the former military commander.

“During this challenging time, I offer my sincere condolences to his family, the Nigerian Armed Forces, and all those who are grieving this significant loss. May God grant his noble soul eternal peace and provide strength to his loved ones as they cope with this painful time,” he stated.

Lt. Gen. Obiakor was renowned for his distinguished military career and contributions to international peacekeeping operations, where he represented Nigeria in various strategic and humanitarian missions across the world.
