KANO, Oct 19, (THEWILL) - Uplifting the condition of men and women especially the less-privileged in the society should be the prime concern of leaders for any development goals to be realized, Nigeria’s former military head of state, General Abdusalami Abubakar has said.

He made the remark today during the launching ceremony of the Malam Ibrahim Shekarau Foundation at Sani Abacha Stadium’s Indoor Sports Hall, Kofar Mata, Kano. The former Head of State further stated that for Shekarau who he described as "Governor-Teacher" to have initiated that Foundation, it is enough to tell people that not only government has a responsibility to make life better for everyone, it is also the responsibility of one and all to think towards the same direction.

He said that the establishment of a foundation of this nature will among other things further motivate and energize the beneficiaries to be socially responsible and more economically productive to the society in order to move the country forward, adding that this has translated the true picture of the governor’s human development initiative in the state.

"This is so important for every government to do. Sardaunan Kano, I commend your great efforts,” Abdulsalami said.

He then congratulated the people and government of Kano state for conducting themselves in a highly peaceful polity and civility, wondering whether this is the outcome of the laudable programmes of the Societal Reorientation or the great courage and wisdom for mass mobilization exhibited by the governor.
