Honouring The Life And Legacy Of My Mother, Madam Oghomwen-Otiti Agnes Omosefe Ekhator (1930 -2026)
As the sun set on January 28, 2026, the heavens opened for my dear mother, Oghomwen-Otiti Agnes Omosefe Nee Ekhator. After a triumphant 96-year journey on this earth, she has gone to be with her Creator. From her humble beginnings as the daughter of the late Otoghile Edobor of Ekonobore village in Ovia North-East local government of Edo State, Nigeria and the revered matriarch of the Chief Agbonmware Ekhator family of Okokhuo village, to her esteemed position as our guiding light and matriarch in the Ekhator family, she was the unshakeable foundation of our lives.

In the quiet of her passing, we—her children: Hon. Joseph Ekhator, Dr. Frank Ekhator, Mr. Adagbonyin Henry Ekhator, Mrs. Rosemary Ikpewe, Mr. Jeffrey Ekhator, Mrs. Omozavbie Uhumwangho, and Mr. Kelly Ekhator—reflect on the immense blessing of her life. Her unwavering values were the foundation upon which our lives were built. We are the men and women we are today because of the mother she was to us. I and my siblings are profoundly blessed to have been guided by her wisdom for 96 years.
In the wake of her passing, we celebrate a life truly well-lived. Mama was a pillar of strength whose influence stretched far beyond our home and into the hearts of the community. She leaves behind a flourishing garden of seven children, thirty grandchildren, and eleven great-grandchildren. Every one of us carries the seeds of hard work and integrity she planted within us. As her son, I pledge that her spirit of service will continue to shine through every generation of the Ekhator family.

To honour a mother of such boundless generosity is to acknowledge a debt that can never truly be repaid. Yet, I am eternally grateful for the solemn honour of tending to her needs in her final moments. Serving her on behalf of my siblings was not merely a duty, but a crowning privilege of my life. As she prepared for her heavenly sojourn, being her strength in those last hours was the greatest tribute I could offer to the woman who gave us everything.

As we bid a final, earthly farewell to our matriarch, Madam Oghomwen-Otiti Agnes Omosefe Ekhator, I, Hon. Jeffrey, along with my siblings and the entire extended Agbonmware Ekhator family, stand in profound awe of the 96-year legacy she leaves etched upon our hearts and the soil of Okokhuo and Ekonobore. Mama was the silent strength behind our successes, a woman whose life was a masterclass in diligence, integrity, and selfless service, and though the bell has rung for her eternal rest, the echoes of her wisdom will continue to guide every generation of the thirty grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren she so dearly loved. To have been the one to provide her comfort and sustenance in her final moments, representing the collective devotion of her children, remains the most sacred privilege of my life—a final act of service to the woman who gave us everything. We do not merely mourn the end of her earthly sojourn; we celebrate a transition into glory, pledging ourselves to uphold the noble values she instilled in us and to ensure that the name Ekhator remains synonymous with the grace and responsibility she personified. Rest now, precious Mother, in the bosom of the Almighty, for your race is finished, your victory is won, and your memory shall remain our most cherished benediction until we meet to part no more.
