A man believed to be Kenyan was found dead in Reading Berkshire, in the United Kingdom (UK) after being exposed to extreme cold weather conditions.

According to Reading authority, a person identified as Kepha Otundo had been living in tents along Abattoirs Road, where a makeshift campsite for homeless individuals had earlier been formed.

“At the time of his death, he was homeless and living in tents along Abattoirs Road in Reading, where a makeshift campsite had formed,” a source disclosed.

Many foreign nationals, face harsh winter conditions, particulary from Africa who lack adequate protection, which lead to tragedy befallen to Kepha Otundo.

According to sources from African community in Reading, the campsite where late Otundo and several other volunarables stayed was under eviction threats.

The campsite had also been threatened with eviction by the Borough.

Last year; *Reading Borough Council* secured a High Court Writ of Possession on July 4, 2025, ordering the removal of all residents from that campsite.

The displacement reated the uncertainty among the occupants.

This kind of bleak future among the occupants of the campsite, further exposed them to the dangers of living outdoors during the extreme cold winter months.

Authorities and support organisations are of the views, the death of Kepha Otundo shows the vulnerability of homeless people, particularly migrants living in these precarious conditions.

This also highlights struggles of many Africans living.

According the support groups, Africa migrants, like Kepha Otundo, suffer in silence, afraid to ask for help!

They feel embarrassed to admit hardship, seek assistance when caught up in such situations. The fear of being seen as failures.

Africans, particularly the homeless, undocumented, with mental exhaustion and those struggling to survive in extreme conditions are encouraged to immediately seek help.

Local shelters, churches, charities, community groups, and Africans diaspora associations often provide emergency support regardless of immigration status, especially during extreme weather conditions.

Reading and Winter Conditions.
Reading is a large town in Berkshire, England, known for its commercial centres and residential areas.

During winter periods, in some parts of the UK, temperatures can significantly drop in minus and reach freezing point, which is not usual in Africa.

Therefore, prolonged exposure to such extreme cold, especially for people without proper shelter, clothing, and heating mechinism, creates negative consequences and severe health risks.

This put many in the town at high health risks, particularly vulnerable individuals during this season, as extreme cold can lead to hypothermia, frostbite, and, in severe cases, death.
