When Faith Becomes A Weapon: Why Religion Should Unite, Not Divide Us
Religion was meant to build nations, not break them.
Religion is one of the most powerful forces shaping human civilisation. It teaches compassion, discipline, and peace. Yet today, it is too often twisted into a tool for division and hatred. This is not the purpose for which God gave humanity religion. Faith was meant to elevate our character and strengthen our societies not to break families, communities, or nations apart. Anyone who uses religion to cause conflict invites the wrath of the Almighty.
The True Essence of Religion
Every authentic religion preaches peace and coexistence. The Qur’an reminds us:
> “O mankind, indeed We have created you from male and female and made you peoples and tribes that you may know one another.” (Qur’an 49:13)
Likewise, Jesus Christ declared:
“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called the children of God.” (Matthew 5:9)
These verses clearly ow that faith is meant to promote harmony, not hostility; compassion, not cruelty; cooperation, not conflict.
Religion as a Force for Social Strength
Rather than dividing us, religion should fortify our society by nurturing honesty, justice, and mutual respect. It should inspire citizens to serve humanity selflessly and to uphold truth in public life. The real measure of one’s faith is not the loudness of religious expression, but the goodness of one’s deeds and the purity of one’s heart.
Beware of Those Who Exploit Religion
Sadly, some individuals and groups exploit religion for political or personal gain. They manipulate people’s emotions, spread falsehood, and sow distrust for their selfish interests. These are the true enemies of faith and peace. This manipulation is not new. When the late President Muhammadu Buhari came to power, some alleged he planned to “Islamise” Nigeria. Yet, during his years in office, nothing of the sort occurred. As he once asked, “If I wanted to Islamise Nigeria, how many people have I Islamised?” That question alone exposes the emptiness of such divisive propaganda.
Similarly, while Muslims are often labelled as extremists, the atrocities and genocide happening in places like Palestine and South Sudan reveal that the real crisis is not religious it is political greed and human wickedness disguised as faith.
Imperialist and Domestic Agendas
Across Africa, powerful interests both local and foreign exploit ethnic and religious sentiments to destabilise nations. They know that a divided people are easier to dominate. These are the same forces that benefit when Africans fight one another, instead of confronting poverty, corruption, and injustice.
Nelson Mandela once reminded us:
> “No one is born hating another person because of the colour of his skin, or his background, or his religion. People must learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love.”
That truth is timeless. We must refuse to be used as tools of division. Unity is our only strength.
A Call for Vigilance and Unity
The world has witnessed enough bloodshed in the name of religion. From the Middle East to Africa, the violence we see is not divine it is man-made. Religious leaders and citizens alike must rise above manipulation and reject those who turn sacred faith into a political weapon. God does not dwell in hatred or lies. He is the God of mercy, justice, and peace. Therefore, religion must become a bridge of understanding, a source of healing, and a foundation for nation-building.
The destiny of our nation depends on our ability to rise above religious and ethnic divisions. Religion should never become a disability among the populace it should be the cure for our moral decay. As Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said:
“The best among you are those who bring the greatest benefit to others.”
Let that guide our hearts and actions. Faith should make us better human beings and more united citizens not bitter adversaries. In truth, when faith becomes a weapon, it ceases to be faith.
