By Tolulope Bayode Abejide

An Open Letter to the Nigerian Government, the Presidency, House of Representatives, House of Senates, Minister of Interior, and All State Governments.

Subject: Urgent Call for Nationwide Amnesty for Submission of Illegal Firearms

Dear Esteemed Leaders of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,

I write to you as a concerned citizen of Nigeria currently residing abroad and serving as a University Lecturer specializing in Forensic Ballistics in the United Kingdom. It is with the utmost respect and patriotism that I pen this letter to address the pressing security challenges facing our beloved country.

As we begin 2025, I urge the government to take decisive action to curb the proliferation of firearms in the hands of unauthorized individuals and groups. A nationwide amnesty for the voluntary submission of illegal firearms is an immediate and necessary step to address this crisis.

The Advantages of a Firearms Amnesty Program

  1. Reduction in Violent Crime: The removal of illegal firearms from the hands of non-state actors and criminal elements will significantly reduce violent crimes such as armed robbery, kidnappings, and communal clashes.
  2. Improved Security Architecture: By retrieving these weapons, law enforcement agencies can better focus on strategic operations and the maintenance of peace and order.
  3. Rebuilding Trust: Offering a no-penalty opportunity for surrendering illegal firearms fosters goodwill and trust between citizens and the government, creating a platform for collaboration in future security initiatives.
  4. Preventing Escalation: Early intervention in disarming unauthorized individuals can mitigate potential security threats, especially in politically sensitive periods.
  5. Safeguarding Lives and Property: A disarmed populace ensures a safer environment for ordinary citizens, boosting morale and encouraging economic growth.

Proposal for Implementation

  1. Declaration of Amnesty: The federal government should declare a one-month amnesty for the submission of illegal firearms, starting as soon as February 1, 2025. This declaration should be widely publicized to reach every corner of the country.
  2. Designated Collection Points: Each state should establish multiple secure collection centers where individuals can surrender firearms anonymously and without fear of prosecution. These points should be managed by joint task forces comprising representatives from the police, military, and civil society organizations.
  3. Public Awareness Campaign: Launch a robust media campaign in all major languages to educate citizens about the program’s objectives and the assurances of no legal repercussions.
  4. Post-Amnesty Measures: Following the amnesty period, the government must enhance enforcement to ensure that remaining illegal firearms are traced and confiscated, with appropriate legal actions taken against defaulters.
  5. Data Collection and Analysis: Utilize this opportunity to gather data on the types and sources of firearms surrendered to inform future policy-making and border security measures.

A Call to Action
Our nation’s future depends on our collective ability to ensure peace, stability, and security for all citizens. The unchecked availability of firearms poses a severe threat to Nigeria’s socioeconomic development and the safety of its people. Declaring this amnesty at the onset of the year demonstrates proactive leadership and a commitment to resolving the country’s security challenges.

I humbly urge the Nigerian Government, through the esteemed office of the Presidency, the Minister of Interior, and the State Governments, to consider this proposal with the urgency it deserves. This initiative is not merely a policy but a moral obligation to protect the lives of Nigerians and to lay a foundation for sustainable peace and development.

Thank you for your attention and service to our great nation. I remain hopeful that together, we can create a safer and more prosperous Nigeria.

Yours faithfully,
Tolulope Bayode Abejide
