'WHY ADEYEMI COLLEGE, OTHERS HAVE NOT CHANGED TO VARSITIES'

The Provost, Adeyemi College of Education in Ondo, Prof. Adeyemi Idowu, has said that the college has not changed to a university because the Federal Government has not taken a final decision on the issue.

He added that there was the need for the Federal Government to issue a final approval before the authorities of the institution and others could change the name of their colleges to universities.

Idosu said this in Ondo on Tuesday while briefing journalists on the activities lined up for the college's 31st convocation ceremony scheduled to hold on Friday and Saturday at the College Quadrangle

He said that 6, 669 graduates of the college would participate in the ceremony which covers the four-year period of 2004-2008.

According to the provost, the successful candidates are 1,067 graduates from 2004/2005, 1,363 from 2005/2006, 1,010 from 2006/2007 and 628 from 2007/2008 in the National Certificate of Education and Diploma in Computer Studies while the rest are degree graduates covering the same period.

The ceremony would be the first since the Federal Ministry of Education announced that the college had been upgraded to a university.

Before it will assume its full university status, the college will have about a third of the graduates getting degree certificates issued by the Faculty of Education of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife this year.

Giving the breakdown of the number of graduates at a pre-convocation press briefing, Idowu said 2,601 would bag various degree certificates with 410 in 2004/2005, 554 in 2005/2006, 727 in 2006/2007 and 910 in 2007/2008.

Among the NCE graduates, he said, 1,126 students would graduate from the School of Social Sciences , 811 from Faculty of Education, 310 from the School of Languages , 924 from the School of Sciences and 897 from the School of Vocational and Technical Education.

Idowu also said 552 got First Degree certificates from the School of Arts and Social Sciences, 953 from the School of Languages , 901 from the School of Science and 195 from the School of Vocational and Technical Education.

He said nine students got First Class, 488 got Second Class Upper Degree, 1,630 got Second Class Lower, 460 got Third Class while 14 students were awarded Ordinary Pass among the 2601 degree graduates in the four-year period.

As part of the convocation ceremony, the provost also said that some eminent Nigerians like the Akwa Ibom State Governor Godswill Akpabio, Chief Rochas Okorocha, Chairman of Rochas Foundation, Senator Grace Bent and the Lisa of Ondo Kingdom Chief Bayo Akinnola, would be conferred with the college fellowship.
