26th General Assembly: CAN Chairman Applaud Contributions of the Presbyterian Church in Educational, Church Development.
The Presbyterian mission has been applauded for her invaluable contributions to the development of the Church and education in Nigeria.
The accolade was given by the chairman, Christian Association of Nigeria, Ebonyi State chapter, Reverend Dr. Scamb Chinedum Nwokolo.
Nwokolo spoke Saturday at the official opening of the ongoing 26th General Assembly meeting of the Church in Nigeria.
The event is taking place at the Akanu Ibiam Federal Polytechnic, Unwana- Afikpo, Ebonyi state.
Nwokolo who was a special guest at the event expressed pride in the personalities and characters of the members of the Clergy from the Church who served, and serving at various levels of CAN in the State.
He noted that the Presbyterian church by her foundation was among the pioneers of western education in Nigeria, and named the late Elder Dr. Akanu Ibiam among others, as those who worked assiduously to promote education in the Southeast zone in particular, and Nigeria in general.
He recalled that the famous Hope Waddell Training Institution established in 1895 at Calabar was the first post–primary institution in the present South-South and Southeastern part of Nigeria and one of the first Comprehensive educational institutions in Nigeria.
He further observed that the Church has through her seminars, workshops, and educational programs contributed in enhancing understanding and cross-denominational and religious respect.
Nwokolo further commended the PCN for their contributions in fostering religious literacy and encouraging dialogue which were germane in promoting harmonious coexistence.
He enjoined the Church to continue to grow and thrive under the good foundation laid by her founding fathers.
The Prelate and General Assembly Moderator of the Presbyterian Church of Nigeria, Most Reverend Ekpeyong Akpanika, while appreciating the Church leader for gracing the event urged him to be relentless in the task of repositioning and unifying the Church in the state
Akpanika explained that the General Assembly is a biennial meeting of the Church aimed at reporting, assessing evaluating and examining the Church's activities for the past years, and to reinvigorate and equip the leaders with the knowledge necessary to help improve upon their given assignments for the coming years.
He added; "It is also important for us to note that it provides us the unique opportunity for spiritual renewal, practical empowerment and to deepen our bonds of fellowship.
"It is usually a time for us to come together, get fresh insight of our activities within the period under review, and to help us refocus on our mandate at all level of our church life with renewed vigour and faith."
In a key note address, one of the Ministers of the Church and a scholar of note, Obinna Elijah, regretted that extreme politicking, professional jealousy and insensitivity to the welfare of retired priests have bedevilled present day churches.
He charged the PCN to explore all strategies towards strengthening the peace and unity of the Church, set appropriate structures for youth empowerment and welfare of the retired ministers, other elderly members of the Church and people with disabilities.
Speaking on the Church's general worship theme for the year "More than conquerors", Elijah stated: "Our theme for the year is an assurance that nothing whatsoever can separate us from the love of God.
"Once we have God on our side, we shall fear nothing."
The event featured prayers for the country, the Church and her leaders.
Appreciation awards were also given to outstanding members and Ministers of the Church
