AHRC Condemns All Political Violence, Urges Politics Around Issues and Policies:
The American Human Rights Council (AHRC-USA) strongly condemns the recent assassination attempt against former President Donald J. Trump. This political violence should not be accepted nor tolerated under any circumstances.
The reality is that we live in a very toxic environment. The US is a divided nation, and the heated and irresponsible political rhetoric fuels the national division. Extremism and radicalization are natural products of such a toxic political environment.
Words matter. We should all be able to disagree without being disagreeable. The attempt on the leading presidential candidate almost succeeded. This should make us all recalibrate and be mindful of the consequences of our words. We should all remember the timeless words of President Abraham Lincoln: "We are not enemies. We must not be enemies. Though passion may have strained, it must not break our bonds of affection."
As a human rights organization, we condemn all forms of political violence. The most important human right is the right to life. In a democracy, disagreements are settled at the ballot box.
AHRC wishes Mr. Trump a speedy recovery. We also wish the spectators who were injured a speedy recovery and express our condolences to the family of the killed spectator.
"These are extraordinary times, and they require our extraordinarily good faith efforts," said Imad Hamad, AHRC Executive Director. "We must all rise to the challenge and set a good example for others," added Hamad.
