By The Nigerian Voice

Prof. Raphael Nyarkotey Obu, a renowned writer, scholar, researcher, educator, and professor of Naturopathy is set to outdoor his book titled **Life in the Gambia,** Tales from a Professor and Aspiring Barrister.

The book explores Prof. Nyarkotey’s journey during his legal education at the Gambia Law School, Banjul. The book explores the Gambian culture; delicacies; herbs; legal system, and many more.

More importantly, it has extensive research on attaya. It further makes a case for legislation on traditional medicine practice in the Gambia. The book is a source of reference for international students who want to study law in the Gambia and for touristsdesiring to explore the Gambia. The book has about 1000 pages and is published by LyteMedya, Ghana. The book aims to raise awareness and promotion of Gambian tourism.

He said he was motivated to write this book after he had an encounter with the traditional healers in the Gambia. He found that the traditional healers have been sidelined in the Gambian healthcare space, yet many people visit these practitioners.

Thus, he believes that there is a need for traditional healers to be accorded the needed attention with legislation to streamline their practice.

Prof. Nyarkotey attests that he aimed to study to become a lawyer when he entered the Gambia from Ghana, but he saw the challenges confronting the traditional healers and with his love and passion for African naturopathy, he decided to help contribute to the Gambian healthcare system to help the healers.

Besides, he said, legal education aims to contribute to societal changes and he is more fulfilled to contribute to the traditional medicine space in the Gambia.

With his passion for law and developmental studies, he is currently studying for another Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Law and Development at the Institute of Development and Technology Management(IDTM), affiliated with the University of Cape Coast, Ghana. He aims to use law to help shape African Naturopathy on the continent.

The book is set to be launched in Ghana in Easter and Prof. Nyarkotey will invite the Gambian community to the launch of this book. For more information, email: [email protected]
