AHRC Appeals For World’s Speeding Up Aid To The Syrian People
The American Human Rights Council (AHRC-USA) joins the human rights global community in calling for speeding up humanitarian aid to Syria and its victims of the recent earthquake that struck Turkey and Syria causing one of the biggest disasters and human crises in both countries.
Thousands of people have lost their lives, thousands of others were injured, and an unknown number is still under the rubble. The number of the dead is expected to dramatically increase.
The world’s community has responded to the crisis and provided aid and sent rescue teams to the region, primarily to Turkey a country that was most impacted by this earthquake. However, it’s clear that the Syrians were largely left behind.
AHRC commends the Biden administration for making it clear that sanctions don’t prevent sending medical and humanitarian aid to Syria. The OFAC (Office of Foreign Asset Control) general license letter allowing sending money to Syria also helped. Despite these measure, compared to the aid sent to Turkey, there is delay in relief o Syria. There is delay especially as to sending the needed equipment to save the trapped under the rubble. Delay costs lives and prolongs suffering.
AHRC salutes all humanitarian teams from all the neighboring countries who rushed to help under extreme hard circumstances amidst unimaginable destruction.
“The world should be promptly helping all those affected by the earthquake, politics should be set aside,” said Imad Hamad, AHRC Executive Director.
