ASUU Strike: OAU Lecturers Commence “Indefinite” strike

By Damilare Adeleye

Members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, on Monday, embarked on an indefinite strike over what the union described as the refusal of the institution’s management to pay their entitled academic allowance.

They accused Eyitope Ogunbodede, the Vice Chancellor, of unnecessarily delaying the payment of the allowance which they claimed had since been remitted into the university’s account by the Nigerian government since December 13, 2021.

The union took the decision at an emergency congress, which was held at the First Bank Lecture Hall on Monday morning.

Meanwhile, the university management, which had earlier described the strike threat issued by the union as a “family affair,” said it is still observing the events as they unveil before taking further step.

We also learnt that, as the strike commences officially, not all lecturers will embark on the strike as not all lecturers in the University are under ASUU.

We gathered that, OAU lecturers are in two factions: ASUU and CONUA. While the lecturers under ASUU are on the strike, the lectures under CONUA will continue giving students lectures.
