14 Sept. Conference On Climate, Conflict And Demography In Africa

By International Crisis Group

International Crisis Group, Africa Confidential and the Royal African Society are jointly hosting a high-level conference on Climate, Conflict and Demography in Africa in September this year to mark, respectively, their 120th, 60th and 25th anniversaries.

The virtual conference will take place on Tuesday 14 September 2021 from 13:00-19:00 BST (14:00-20:00 CET) and aims to develop specific policy recommendations on climate change and conflict to pass on to the UN Climate Change Conference (COP 26) taking place in Glasgow in November this year.

Headlining the event will be President Akufo Addo of Ghana and Vice President Yemi Osinbajo of Nigeria.

The purpose of the conference is to draw attention to the challenges that many countries in Africa face from the accelerating impact of climate change and demographic pressure on the continent and the interplay with conflict. By analysing how these pressures are impacting African societies and how different responses are working, we aim to identify ways of reducing the risks posed by climate and demography and helping African governments manage these pressures in ways that avoid conflict.
