In a country that is in dire need of great leaders to man her various ministries, departments and agencies spread across the country, it would not be out of place for one to be excited over the appointment of Chief Dr. Uche Nworah, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Anambra Broadcasting Service (ABS) as a member of the Committee for modalities for revival of Society of Nigerian Broadcasters (SNB), by the Broadcasting Organization of Nigeria (BON). As contained in a reportage conveyed by ABS and written by Dan Ezeigwe of ABS News, the Committee is a “Regulatory authority to regulate the profession and practice of broadcasting in Nigeria, set required academic qualifications, and ethical standards for broadcasting practitioners.

Without sounding panegyric in this context, Nworah’s appointment can aptly be described as “A Round Peg In A Round Hole” as the responsibilities he is charged with at the Committee unarguably blend with his Abilities, Skills and Knowledge (ASK).

“While communicating the decision of the Central Working Committee of BON, at its meeting held on Wednesday, August 4, 2021 to Chief Dr. Nworah, he and other Committee members were mandated to deepen the process of establishing the Society of Nigerian Broadcasters (SNB).

“BON said it is confident that the involvement of the Committee members in the process will yield a positive outcome, as it is delighted to tap from their wealth of experience as broadcasters.

At this juncture, it is expedient to recall his prowess at ABS through the support of the State Governor, Willie Obiano as he has been recording unprecedented successes that were lacking before his appointment. At a media parley few months back with the Guardian newspaper, precisely in April, 2021, Nworah, admirably called “Ezeudo” said, “The Governor has invested extensively in both equipment and Human Resources. He built a brand new digital radio and TV complex, bought brand new transmitters and other equipment. ABS through this has become a global media brand as we now serve a worldwide audience. In as much as he has the support of the governor, he no doubt deserved to be applauded as narratives of not few personaliies that bungled opportunities offered to them are not farfetched across the country.

As he further disclosed at the parley, “Ndi Anambra living in the diaspora are now able to follow what’s happening at home through ABS App, ABS website, ABS live Facebook streaming, ABS internet TV etc. Even those living in Nigeria receive our radio and TV signals from distant places. We currently have over 800,000 followers on our Facebook page alone, attracted by our quality contents. No state owned media in Nigeria can boast of such numbers. I am hoping that we would have crossed the one million followers mark by the time we exit in 2022.

He added, “The quality of our content has improved tremendously and we have received several industry awards for these. We now produce our own TV series, dramas, documentaries and movies both for our own TV audience, and for syndication and distribution. We are now exporting Anambra culture to distant lands. ABS is now a magnet for creatives in the Southeast; young people now want to work with us. This wasn’t the case before when the brand was derided. There is a lot going on at ABS at the moment; we have a Film Academy and have trained over 200 students in broadcasting, filmmaking, animation etc. The future is even brighter, thanks to the Governor”.

“While communicating the decision of the Central Working Committee of BON, at its meeting held on Wednesday, August 4, 2021 to Chief Dr. Nworah, he and the other Committee members were mandated to deepen the process of establishing the Society of Nigerian Broadcasters (SNB).

“BON said it is confident that the involvement of the Committee members in the process will yield a positive outcome, as it is delighted to tap from their wealth of experience as broadcasters.

“Speaking to Anambra Broadcasting Service, Chief Dr. Nworah appreciated BON for finding him and the other committee members worthy to serve, and assured that they would do their best to achieve the mandate given to the committee.

“The inaugural meeting of the Committee will hold on Tuesday, August 24, 2021 at BON Secretariat in Abuja.

“Among other issues, the Committee will deliberate on Membership of Society of Nigerian Broadcasters (SNB), mode of application, membership categories and fees, Qualification (academic, work experience, etc. required) and possible start-up period”.

At this juncture, to say that Nworah’s appointment is more than well-deserved is an understatement given his known track record of excellent performance in his position as the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Anambra Broadcasting Service (ABS). While it is certain that his position as a member of the Committee for modalities for revival of society of Nigerian Broadcasters (SNB) at NBC will not be exception, it is germane to wish him well with prayers and trusting God to help him succeed in the task ahead. Needless to say, most of his admirers including this writer will be more than delighted to see him conclude this onerous task in the hope that he will leave the Committee at BON better than he met it.
