A 41-year old man, Waidi Adelabu has been sentenced to six months imprisonment by an Osogbo Magistrate Court for displaying and smoking publicly, wraps of Indian hemp also known as cannabis sativa.

Police prosecutor, Elisha Olusegun told the court that the accused person publicly displayed the hemp in a manner likely to cause breach of public peace.

He said Adelabu also had in his possession, two other wraps of Indian hemp on the day he was arrested.

He added that the offence committed by Adelabu is contrary to and punishable under sections 249(d) and 430(1) of the Criminal Code cap 34, volume II, Laws of Osun State of Nigeria, 2002.

When his charges were read to him, the accused person pleaded guilty of the offences levelled against him.

His counsel, Mr Kazeem Badmus appealed to the court to be lenient in its judgment as the accused person deeply regrets his action and has no previous criminal record.

In his ruling, the judge, Magistrate Olusola Aluko sentenced the accused person to six months imprisonment or a fine option of N10,000. The convict was however able to pay the fine and he left the court premises as ex-convict.
