Niger Delta deserves better deal – Osinbajo

By The Citizen

The Federal Government has again admitted that oil-producing communities of the Niger Delta deserve a better deal.

Speaking at the State House in Abuja yesterday while meeting with some ministers and heads of agencies and departments, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo said the suffering of the people of the region was due to past leadership failure.

He said: 'The president believes the people of the Niger Delta deserve justice, and for me also it is a very important point. The state of the region and the suffering of the people do not reflect the fact that it is the resource base of the country.'

The Minister of State for Environment, Ibrahim Jibrin, informed participants of the meeting about the engagement of the Ogoni clean-up project coordinator, Dr. Marvin Dekil, a native of Ogoni.

The minister also disclosed that potential contractors had been visiting the site to demonstrate available and suitable technology to be used for the exercise.

The leader of the delegation, the Dutch envoy, John C.M. Groffen, said countries represented at the meeting would like to 'stay involved in the dialogue.' - Daily Trust.
