Press release on Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s meeting with President of the House of Representatives (Parliament) of Libya Aguila Saleh Issa

On December 14, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov met with President of the House of Representatives of Libya Aguila Saleh Issa who is in Moscow on a working visit at the invitation of the State Duma of the Russian Federal Assembly.

The discussion focused on the development of the situation in Libya and prospects for the settlement of the internal political crisis in that country. The Russian side confirmed its commitment to supporting Libya’s independence and territorial integrity and stressed the need to involve representatives from across the country’s political spectrum, tribal groups and regions in the intra-Libyan dialogue.

Sergey Lavrov said that success in reaching mutually acceptable agreements will allow Libya’s Government of National Accord to start resolving the country’s pressing internal problems, including the need to counter the terrorist threat. In this context, emphasis was placed on the importance of reaching a national consensus for the establishment of uniform government bodies in the country. The Russian minister confirmed that Moscow was prepared to facilitate progress in the political process through its contacts with representatives of various Libyan political forces.

On the same day, Aguila Saleh Issa had detailed talks with Deputy Foreign Minister and Special Presidential Representative for the Middle East and Africa Mikhail Bogdanov.
