IPAC SLAMS GOVERNOR OBIANO FOR NON CONDUCT OF LG POLLS IN ANAMBRA

By ANR

The Inter-party Advisory Council of Nigeria ( IPAC ) has condemned in very strong terms the inability of the governmennt of Chief Willie Obiano to conduct local government elections for the 21 council areas in Anambra state.

IPAC said the non-conduct of local government polls has destroyed local government system in Anambra state and that the governor’s decision not to conduct the election was in contrast with section 7 ( 1 ) of the 1999 constitution ( as amended ) which according to the body provided that there must be a democratically elected local government officials in every local government

of the federation .
The body also pointed out that the “complacent attitude” of Governor Willie Obiano towards the conduct of council polls in the state , was clearly reflected in the 2017 appropriation bill presented to the Anambra State House of Assembly where the body equally observed that no budgetary provision whatsoever was made for the Anambra state local government election .

As a result , the Anambra state chapter of the IPAC while briefing newsmen in Awka on the resolution of the body, urged the state governor to make funds available through a supplementary budget for the conduct of local government election.

It also mandated the state government to reconstitute the Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission so as to give the commission the necessary constitutional requirements to commence procedures for the conduct of the protracted local government election stressing that any policy of government to directly or indirectly deny the people of their rights to elect their

representatives through a democratic process is a violation of the constitution.

The body equally threatened to appeal to the national assembly and the federal government to stop the release of all federal

allocations meant for Anambra state local governments pending when duly elected local government executives emerge .

To this end, IPAC issued a 3- month statutory notice to Governor Willie Obiano that in the event of non-compliance with the demand for the conduct of local government election in the 21 local government areas of the state, the organisation will be compeled to institute a legal action against him in the court of law .

In another development , IPAC also made it categorically clear that the former embattled chairman of Anambra IPAC and state chairman of APGA Chief Norbert Obi has been barred from parading himself as chairman of IPAC in Anambra pending the

resolutions of the petitions written against his election.

The body also resolved that henceforth Oby Kate Okafor, former deputy chairman is now Ag.chairman of Inter-party Advisory Council of Nigeria Anambra state chapter while Barr. Emeka Ibeh is secretary of the body.
