Nigeria Has No Government – Okeke Chika Jerry

Awka – Renowned Nigerian author and the former gubernatorial candidate in Anambra State , Mr. Okeke Chika Jerry has said that Nigeria do not have a government.

He said this on Saturday, 3rdSeptember in a panel session, tagged “State of the Nation”. Speaking on the topic, “2016 Budget: How National”, Jerry said “As far as I am concerned, Nigeria has no government, because if she does, the budget should reflect in the lives of the masses”. He further identified corruption as the bane of the “Nigerian government”, observing that the elected leaders at all levels are more interested in fulfilling their personal interests rather than the interest of the people who voted them into power.

The panel discussion which was organized by Literanation, a non-profit literary organization, also featured Mr. Chuma Nwokolo, a lawyer, activist and the publisher of African Writing. Addressing the sub-topic, “The fight against Corruption: How genuine?” Mr Nwokolo noted that the best way to fighting corruption is to Systemic change. Expressing worry over the spate of corruption in the country, he disclosed Nigeria has over 20,000 abandoned infrastructural projects, with the funds budgeted for these projects unaccounted for.

Proffering solution, the author of the book “The Ghost of Sani Abacha” proposed adopting the Corporate Corruption Act, which he devised and presented to the National Assembly in 2015. The bill, otherwise known as BribeCode seeks to liquidate corporate bodies convicted of serious corruption.
