A’ Ibom Finance Commissioner Tasks Young Entrepreneurs

If young entrepreneurs choose to tow the line of global best practices by harnessing the principle of financial intelligence, they will add value to their respective businesses.

This was the focal point of a paper presented by the Akwa Ibom State Finance Commissioner, Mr. Akan Okon at a public lecture put together by Character and Success Project , in collaboration with the University of Uyo, held recently at UNIUYO campus.

Describing financial intelligence as technical knowledge and skills derived from understanding the basic theories of finance and accounting, the Commissioner stated that besides access to funds, an entrepreneurial manager must be financially literate through self development to enable him take concrete steps and wise decisions regarding the smooth running of his business.

This, according to him would in turn facilitate strength and viability of the firm.

Reiterating that the key to success lies in the ability to focus on vision, hardwork, determination and above all faith in God , Mr Akan Okon said it was also expedient for individuals to draw up strategic blueprints with timelines to achieve set targets.

The Finance boss who was the guest speaker, tasked the students to shun anti-social activities but to pursue their studies with vigour so as to excel and become useful citizens of the country, adding that actualizing set goals, should always be the focus of any student.

On his part, the Special Assistant to the Governor on Social Re-orientation,Mr. Ekpeno Gold gave an insight on the grass to grace story of his life.

He said he took a bold step to start-up a small enterprise few years back and that proceeds from the business saw him through University, subsequently growing to earn him the status of an employer of labour.

He maintained that it was necessary to take risk by starting up something with a mindset to succeed even amid uncertainty.

While pointing out that with God all things are possible, he charged the youths to strive to discover their God-given talent as everyone has a purpose on earth.

Earlier, the initiator of the programme, Mr. Gideon Ekanem stated that Character and Success Project was conceived as a platform to train and mould the youths on good character, and to also inspire them to strive for excellence.

Ekanem applauded the Dakkada initiative of Governor Udom Emmanuel which to him was similar to his programme as it has reawakened people's consciousness that they can be great.

He therefore called on Nigerians and indeed Africans to take a step of faith and rise to greatness in order to be at par with their counterparts in developed countries of the world.
