Frequent Attacks On Mosques: Borno Leaders Meet To Seek Way Out
BEVERLY HILLS, October 24, (THEWILL) – Leaders of thought in Borno State, both traditional and religious, will this Sunday meet in Maiduguri, the state capital, to explore ways of protecting mosques and other religious worship centres from recent frequent attacks by Boko Haram insurgents.
The state governor, Kashim Shettima, disclosed this Saturday, while receiving the special delegation sent by President Muhammadu Buhari to condole with the people of the state over recent terrorist attacks.
He disclosed that he had summoned a security meeting to be attended by all Imams of mosques in Maiduguri, Jere and surrounding areas as well as district heads, village heads and those manning streets called Lawans and Bulamas, saying the meeting will be facilitated by the Shehu of Borno, Abubakar Ibn Umar Garbai Elkanemi.
Shettima said the parley would discuss firm measures that might require policy pronouncements aimed at addressing the recent attacks on mosques during prayers.
The six-man delegation led by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Mr. Babachir David Lawan, was sent to visit Borno and Adamawa states, following Friday's suicide attacks at mosques in Maiduguri and Yola.
Shettima told the delegation that the attacks should not be seen as an act of authority of the insurgents but rather as a noise aimed at attracting the attention of all.
Disclosing that the insurgents have lost so much ground in the state, from 20 local governments they were controlling to three at present, Shettima said the insurgents are presently on the run and could not be said to have a stronghold in the state.
