Borno NBA Wants Quick Resolution Of Judiciary Crisis

The Borno State chapter of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has called for the quick resolution of the crisis currently rocking the Judiciary leading to the crippling of all courts across the country.

Making the call on Monday was the chairman of the Maiduguri branch of the Nigeria Bar Association, Abdulwasiu Alfa, while delivering his speech during the Annual Law Week of the Maiduguri/ Biu branches of the association.

Lamenting that the strike embarked upon by Judiciary workers has resulted in the shutting down of all courts nationwide thus hindering the administration of justice, Alfa noted that the lingering security challenges in the state have posed a lot of challenges to the administration of justice in general and legal practice in particular.

According to Alfa,“It has succeeded in crippling a substantial aspect our means of livelihood; it has, in fact, threatened our values and essence. Today, legal practice is narrowed to the state capital only. No one gets brief outside Maiduguri. Legal practitioners are very precarious and vulnerable situation.” –

The NBA chairman said the annual law week provides a platform for members of the legal profession to acquire and improve their skills and knowledge in their field of practice within their domain for enhanced productivity.

According to him, the theme of the discussion for the week revolves around the application of the Borno State High Court civil procedures rules 2012.

“The choice of the theme is apt. There is compelling need for the Bar and the Bench to clearly understand the spirit and letters as well as intent of the above orders in the rules. Only few of us understand the rules and even less, appreciate it. This is the only avenue for us to understand and appreciate it,” he added.

Declaring the workshop open, Governor Kashim Shettima said the NBA is one of the most respected professional associations in Nigeria because they its members have consistently remained voice of the voiceless and always offer a shoulder for the distressed in the society to lean on.

Shettima, who was represented at the occasion by the state Commissioner for Justice and Attorney General, Kaka Shehu Lawan, said his government will continue to partner with the NBA in the dispensation of justice in the state.
