Abia 2015: Group Accuse Diamond Bank Boss, Otti Of Playing Spoiler's Role
A socio-political group, South East Progressives Assembly (SEPA) has accused the Group Managing Director/ Chief Executive Officer (MD/CEO) of Diamond Bank, Dr. Alex Otti of joining the 2015 Abia state governorship race to play a spoiler's role and deny the Ukwa/ Ngwa people a chance to produce a governor.
The group chided the top banker for allegedly attacking Gov. Theodore Orji and the state chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) over their insistence that Abia South should produce the next governor in accordance with the zoning arrangement that has prevailed in the state since the return of democracy in 1999.
In a statement made available to Pointblanknews.com and signed by its President, Hon. Ebere Uzoukwa, the group wondered why Otti has refused to resign his position as Managing Director of Diamond bank to prove that he is truly contesting the governorship seat of Abia state and not playing a spoiler's role.
“SEPA notes with dismay the unscrupulous activities of one Dr. Alex Otti who suppose to be the Managing Director of Diamond bank and custodian of peoples' investment and deposits. Otti who claims to have come from Isiala Ngwa South in Abia central and not Arochukwu as originally known to everyone claims he is contesting the governorship of Abia state under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), a party his membership remains in doubt.
“It is a fact that PDP which Otti claims to belong has officially zoned its governorship ticket based on equity, justice and fairness to Abia south; a decision overwhelmingly supported by party members across the state including Gov. Theodore Orji who doubles as the leader of the party in Abia state. The implication of that decision is that Otti has been automatically zoned out of the governorship race whether he is from Abia North or Abia Central. Rather than Otti who expected to be a true and loyal party man to stand behind the PDP he claimed to belong on that popular decision or join another political party to actualize his ambition, the Diamond bank boss to the chagrin of all Abians, resorted to heating up the polity as he continued to conduct himself in a manner that suggests that PDP or Abia belongs to him. He has continued to insist that zoning or no zoning, he will contest the election.
“This becomes more worrisome considering the fact that Otti owing to his position as the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer remains the custodian peoples' huge investments and funds in Diamond bank. Having refused to resign before now to actually prove his seriousness in the governorship contest vis-a-vis his reckless and unguarded utterances and conducts that are now heating up the polity in Abia state, SEPA hereby concludes that Otti has a wicked agenda of spoiling the show for the people of Abia south.”
While calling on relevant regulatory agencies and Board of Directors of Diamond bank to urgently call Otti to order, SEPA handed down a one- week ultimatum for him to resign his position or desist from making utterances to avoid heating up the polity in Abia state.
“Does it mean that the Board of Directors and shareholders of Diamond are not seeing how Otti is carelessly risking their investment on the altar of partisan politics? What about the relevant regulatory agencies that regulate the activities of the financial institutions and their key operators to ensure professionalism? Are they not aware that Otti has been hiring private jets and helicopters with investors funds and deposits which he uses to junket all over the country at the detriment of his job claiming to be contesting the governorship of Abia state?
“We are therefore giving Otti a one- week ultimatum to resign his position as Managing Director of Diamond bank or desist from making further heating up the polity in Abia state. If not so, SEPA will advise its members and Nigerians to withdraw their investments and deposits from Diamond bank,” SEPA threatened.
