The Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly on Thursday repealed the N100m medical allowance for former governors and N50m of the same allowance for former deputy governors Pension Law 2014.

Section 1 (d) of the bill provides free medical allowance for former governors and spouse and deputy governors and spouse without any monetary value attached to the section.

Only 11 out of the 26 members of the AKHA were at Thursday's plenary when the bill was repealed.

It would be recalled that Akwa Ibom State governor, Mr. Godswill Akpabio, had on May 28, assented to the pension law 2014.

The development however, resulted in public outcry including calls for a repeal from civil society groups and the Nigeria Labour Congress.

The section of the bill as it was initially passed by the lawmakers, madeĀ provision forĀ free medical services for former governors and their spouses at a sum not exceeding N100m per annum and N50m per annum for former deputy governors and spouses. Punch
