San Francisco, March 17 (THEWILL) – Reports from Jos, Plateau State say at least 13 people have been killed in an attack in a village in Riyom Local Government Area, about 28 km from Jos township.

The attack happened at about 1 a.m. WAT on Wednesday and a Red Cross official confirmed said the agency has sent aide to the area.

There were conflicting reports as to the number of persons murdered but women were mostly affected.

Military authorities said nine persons were killed in Biye while 13 houses were burnt down. They however said seven persons have been arrested.

One of the survivors of the attack claimed the Fulanis, some in military uniforms, invaded their village at about 2am on Wednesday morning while it was raining and started shooting in the air to lure home owners out of their homes before they were cut down and their houses burnt.

In his reaction to the violence, the state governor through a statement by his spokesman, James Mannok, assured victims that the government would all within its power to bring the perpetrators to justice.

Plateau State continue to be a hotbed for religious clashes with over 1000 persons killed since renewed violence erupted in January.
