The explosion, Pointblanknews.com garthered, went off about 6.55 am local time.

The explosion was so powerful and could be heard over 10 kilometres away.

Details of the explosion were sketchy, but witnesses claimed it appeared from a park used by high capacity buses operated under the federal government”s Subsidy Reinvestment Programme (SURE-P).

The buses are usually patronized by civil servants, as they are the only buses allowed into Abuja.

Eyewitnesses claimed to have seen scores covered in blood, but there could be no official confirmation as to the number of casualties.

This is the first attack on Abuja in about two years after security beef up in the wake of a string of bomb attacks on the United Nation's building, police headquarters, and Thisday newspapers, by members of the Boko Haram sect.

Three weeks ago, federal forces killed at least 21 members of the sect who attempted a jail break from the heavily fortified headquarters of the State Security Services (SSS).
