National Assembly will not compromise the interest of Nigeria —Mark

President of the Senate, Senator David Mark has reiterated that the National Assembly will stand and defend only those things that would engender peace and unity of Nigeria even as he stated that the legislature has no conflicting roles with the executive arm of government.

Senator Mark stated that dividends  of democracy would be faster delivered if the legislature and the executive arms of government  work in harmony  in line with the constitutional mandates for the good of the citizenry.

Speaking at the Senator Nurudeen Abatemi-Usman Initiative empowerment programme in Okene Kogi state yesterday, Senator Mark stressed the need to abhor friction between and among government functionaries so that the electorate could benefit from government programmes and policies.

Apparently referring to the recent security challenges in which thousands of country men and women have gone to the great beyond, Senator Mark pleaded for peaceful coexistence between and among Nigerians saying” there has to be peace for us to talk about development at any given point. Government alone cannot guarantee peace, it is the cooperation of all us irrespective of political parties that can bring peaceful coexistence.”

He said there is need for all elected public officers to work together de emphasizing political affiliations ” because political parties are mere vehicles to be elected for service to the people .”

In his remarks , governor Wada Idris of Kogi state praised Senator Abatemi- Usman for the initiative saying that his efforts have fully complimented the programmes of government in alleviating the plight of the ordinary citizens.

He said  Abatemi has kept his electioneering campaign promises to the electorate  saying that ” the  action is fulfilling and reassuring.”

Senator Abatemi stated that he is committed to the welfare of the people pointing out that the empowerment scheme includes human capital development especially for the youths,

About 1,207 persons and groups benefitted from the cars , buses,motor cycles, sewing machines, video cameras, generators among others at the ceremony.
