Abatemi-Usman commiserates with Newswatch over death of editor

By Michael Jegede

Vice Chairman Senate Committee on Niger Delta Affairs, Senator Nurudeen Abatemi-Usman has commiserated with the family, management and staff of Newswatch Newspaper over the demise of its Deputy Editor, Saturday title, Mr. Toyin Obadina.

Obadina was reported to have died on Sunday due to injuries he sustained from gunshot by men of the underworld on Friday night at Ikorodu, Lagos, on his way home, after withdrawing money from an Automated Teller Machine (ATM) preparatory to a trip he was to embark on the following day.

In a statement signed by Mr. Michael Jegede, the Senator's Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Abatemi-Usman representing Kogi Central Senatorial District on the platform of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), condemned the killing of the deputy editor.

Wondering why some people do not have value for human life, the Senator called on the police to do everything within their reach to fish out the culprits and bring them to book to serve as deterrent to others in the same deadly trade of killing innocent citizens for no just cause.

Describing the death of Obadina as an irreparable loss not just to the members of his family and staff of Newswatch, but to the entire members of the pen profession in the country, he said: “My heart goes out to the family, management and staff of Newswatch Newspaper and the entire members of the media profession in Nigeria over the untimely death of Mr. Toyin Obadina, the Deputy Editor of Saturday Newswatch. I pray God to grant you the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss.”

He added: “the perpetrators of this dastardly act must not be allowed to go scot free. It is indeed very sad and unfortunate for an innocent man to be so killed on his way home after a hectic day job by some people who do not have the slightest regard for the sanctity of human life. The police must go after them and do everything possible to get them and bring them to face justice. May the soul of Mr. Toyin Obadina rest in perfect peace!”
