Photojournalist attached to the Presidency shot
A photojournalist, Mr. Callistus Ewelike, attached to President Goodluck Jonathan, narrowly escaped death on Monday night when unidentified gunmen shot him at close range in front of his house at Nyanya, the outskirts of Abuja.
Curiously, the gunmen ran away without taking anything suggesting that they were no robbers but perhaps assassins.
According to reports, the photojournalist was attacked between 10pm and 11pmby two men who rode on a motorbike
Ewelike is an employee of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Abuja.
He was said to have been attacked when he returned home from an assignment attended by President Jonathan around Durumi, a settlement in the Federal Capital Territory.
According to the reports, the two men trailed him on a motorbike and that just as he alighted from his vehicle, one of them shot him in the neck at close range.
Th gunmen were said to have sped off before neighbours, who were attracted by gunshot, could arrive at the scene.
Ewelike was rushed to a nearby hospital before he was transferred to National Hospital, Abuja where medical doctors are said to be currently preparing him for surgery.
He was however, said to be in a stable condition.
The FCT Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Altine Daniel confirmed the incident, adding that .
the Commissioner of Police, Femi Ogunbayide, had ordered 'full scale investigation' into the shooting, with a matching order for the manhunt and arrest of the assailants
Ewelike was said to have been attacked last year by armed men who forced themselves into his house and robbed him of his working tools, including camera and a laptop as well as a few other personal effects.
