Shuga Naija: A peak into Nigeria's new hottest show

By Bisoye Babalola

Shuga Naija is an educational yet captivating TV programme that was first aired on MTV Base in November 2009. The aim of the show was to raise awareness to young people surrounding the issues of having unprotected sex. Since the first episode the show seems to have become a hit, and is now on its 3rd series. I don't remember how I was introduced to this show, although I do remember that I am now somewhat obsessed.

I found Shuga Naija interesting because it paints a realistic picture of what situations and problems that young people in Nigeria or around the world encounter. The cast has a mixture of people. It is mixed with some well-known talent e.g Tiwa Savage who plays the role of Sade, a club owner. As well as Rap Icon, Ice Prince who plays himself. Although there is also some new talent to the cast and our TV screens including e.g Okezie Morro who plays the role of Ekene, Dorcas Shola Fapson who plays the role of Sophie and Chisom Sharon Ezeamaka who plays the role of Princess, Sophie's younger sister. There are many other members of the cast that appear throughout different episodes in the show. However you're going to have to watch it to see who they are.

At the moment my favourite character is Sophie, she speaks her mind and is confident. So far throughout the show we have been able to see Sophie's character develop, we have seen different sides to her personality. We as the audience were able to feed of her pain when she thought that she may have HIV/aids.

The show is very inspiring and I would recommend it to people of all ages around the globe. Although some of the actors speak in their dialect and languages, they're subtitles and it is very easier to follow. Shuga Naija can educate a lot of people young and old about issues involving sex and relationships.
