The recent announcement by Deputy Senate President, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, recommending tenure elongation for the president and governors is a selfish political gambit, the Enugu State Professionals (ESP) has said.

According to the group, it is part of his game plan to wend his way into the governorship seat of the Enugu State despite that the rotational accord in the state. It said that Ekweremadu had a ”vaulting ambition to rule Enugu State, irrespective of the fact that the ruling People’s Democratic Party, PDP, had zoned the position to Enugu North Senatorial zone (Nsukka) adding that his veiled suggestion for tenure elongation was to endear himself to President Goodluck Jonathan. The National President of the Professionals, Chief Ernest Udoye, who made these known in a statement in Enugu on Tuesday, said  that Ekweremadu had been making elaborate plans to cause confusion in the political arrangement which had ensured peace in the state in the last 14 years by contesting the governorship election at all costs, stressing that his establishment of a radio station in the state was for his campaigns.

He said, ”We are all aware that Ekweremadu is self-seeking. He established his radio station which cropped out the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria, FRCN, from its 92.8 metre band, short wave and ensured that his station used same frequency, while the FRCN now uses 92.9. This is condemnable. ”He also accused Governor Sullivan Chime of planning to destroy about 140 projects he attracted to his Enugu West Senatorial Zone. Ekweremadu did not become the deputy Senate President on account of the fact that he hails from Enugu West. The position was zoned to the whole Igbo. Why has he not named the projects he attracted to other parts of Igbo land using his position? ”Our worry is that Igbo are always used to foment this type of confusion. Are we the only tribe in this country? It is a shame.’
