The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Saturday declared the candidate of the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA), Mr. Willie Obiano, as the  winner of the Anambra State governorship election after collating results from the supplementary elections conducted on the 30th of November 2013.

Obiano polled atotal of 180,708 votes in to defeat his closest rival Tony Nwoye of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) who polled 97,700 votes.

A supplementary election was held in 210 polling units on Saturday after INEC had  declared the exercise inconclusive in some wards in the affected council areas in the November 16 election..

In the final result as announced Sunday morning, Chris Ngige of the APC and Ifeanyi Ubah of the Labour party came third and fourth, respectively, with 95, 963 and 37, 495 votes.

According to the results already released by INEC, total number of votes cast is 442, 242; total number of valid votes stood at 425, 254 and total number of rejected votes put at 16, 988.

APGA won in 16 council areas- Aguata, Ayamelum, Anambra East, Anambra West, Anaocha, Awka North, Awka South, Ekwusigo, Ihiala, Njikoka, Nnewi South, Ogbaru, Onitsha North, Onitsha South, Orumba North and Orumba South.

The PDP won in Oyi and Dunukofia, APC won in Idemili North and South, while labour party won in Nnewi North.

Reports indicate that  some people were still doing their normal businesses despite restriction of movement in the affected areas and traffic was light on the roads in all the areas.

According to various reports, soldiers were stationed along all the roads leading to Idemili North local government area and Onitsha South local government area, which had the highest number of polling units of 160 and 17 respectively where the supplementary election took place.

Agents of APC, LP candidates were sighted at polling stations even when campaign organisations of  APC, LP, and PDP, candidates had said they would not participate in the exercise.

However, while APGA and PDP agents wore tags, those who claimed to be APC agents did not wear their tags. At Abatete in Idemili north, agents of the PDP and LP were at the polling units.

In all the polling units where the supplementary polls took place yesterday, there was very low turnout of voters and heavy presence of security operatives.

In most polling units, electoral officials and sensitive electoral materials arrived early. But, despite the early arrival of these materials, the number of eligible voters, who came out for the accreditation exercise, was very low compared to the turn-out during the November 16 and 17 elections.
