By Okechukwu Onuegbu

Over 200 women under the aegis of Amalgamated Market and Traders Association (AMATA), Women Ambassadors, Anambra state chapter have urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to declare the winner of the November 16th Governorship election in the state.

The women who bear placards of different inscriptions, took to streets of Awka, the capital of Anambra state, recently and obstructed vehicle movements for about 30 minutes at Arroma junction, chorusing: “All we are saying is INEC give us result”; “INEC, quickly declare the result, there is no time to check time”.

Speaking to newsmen, AMATA state Women Leader, Hon. Mrs. Promise Chinwe Ezeigbo described the gubernatorial poll as a free and fair, credible election and called on INEC to quickly declare the gubernatorial election's result so as to enable them know their next governor.

According to Mrs. Ezeigbo, “Describing this election as inconclusive is improper. We have never heard such language in Anambra state since inception. Besides, the election was free and fair. There were no irregularities, no violence or violating of electoral laws. So, I wonder why people are calling for its total cancellation just because they lost… this is unfair. Our Politicians should learn to accept defeat without grudges”.

“Therefore, we are calling on the INEC Chairman, Prof. Attahiru Jega and Anambra state Resident Electoral Commissioner, Prof Chukwuemeka Onukogu to tell us our Governor's elect without fear. We are with him. Please, let him listen to us, we are the voters, the women Ambassadors and mother of the electorates. We have voted for our choice; hence we wish to know who he is now”.

Similarly, the AMATA state Secretary General, Hon. Mrs. Eucharia Nwankwu and the group's women leader in Aguata Local Government Area, Mrs. Eunice Eze commended INEC, the NYSC, Nigerian Police and all those who assisted in ensuring successful conduct of the governorship poll but urged them to also foresee that November 30th supplementary election holding at about 160 polling booths in the state record hitch-free as well.
