What govt must do before we call off strike – ASUU

Members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) have spelt out conditions the Federal Government should fulfill before they would call of the strike which is on the fourth month.

Primarily, they want all federal parastatals in charge of fund, labour, and education to be part of the new deal  reached between their  leadership and the Federal Government on Tuesday.

ASUU members, it was gathered, are mindful of the current difficulties in getting the government fulfill commitments made in the 2009 agreement.

'We want the Central Bank of Nigeria, Ministries of Finance and Labour, National Assembly, Office of the Presidency, National Universities Commission, Tertiary Education Trust Fund, Trade Union Congress and our umbrella body, the Nigeria Labour Congress, to sign. That way we get the commitment of all relevant parties and avoid stories in future,' a lecturer said under unanimity, because he was not empowered to speak for ASUU.

Getting the above parties involved in the agreement which the umbrella body of university lecturers want the government to re-enter, it hopes to avoid the pitfalls in the 2009 agreement which the ASUU members have been pointing up in their negotiations with the government.

The impression given the government party in the current negotiation with ASUU leadership is that those who represented government in the 2009 negotiations committed government far and above its practical capacity.

The Federal Government had earlier in the week promised to release N220bn every year for five years, then all monetary and regulatory agencies must sign.
