More than 150 soldiers were sentenced to death by a court in Bangladesh on Tuesday for torturing and killing scores of senior officers during a 2009 mutiny.

A further 400 soldiers from a unit formerly known as the Bangladesh Rifles (BDR), which patrols the country's borders, were sentenced to terms of up to life imprisonment for their role in the 30-hour mutiny, in which 74 people were killed and their bodies tossed into sewers and shallow graves.

The dead included the BDR's director-general, his wife and deputy as well as over 50 senior and mid-ranking officers from the unit.
