The National Complementary and Alternative Medical Association (NACAMA) Nigeria has bemoaned the rise of quacks in the profession even as it enjoined Nigerians to stop patronizing Herbalists who claimed to be their member while unhealthy but to seek advice from registered and authorized medical practitioners in order not to endanger their lives.

NACAMA President, Dr. Peter Katchy who gave the charge at a-grand reception organized in his honuor by Anambra state chapter of the organization, further urged members to stand at alert and face the profession squarely so as to rid off quacks in the profession.

According to him, alternative medicine established under the medical and dental practitioners act no. 78 1992 (as amended) is different from herbal as it focused on homoepathy, naturopathy, acupuncture and osteopathy and not typically used in allopathic practice-conventional orthodox medicine.

He decried that the media grants airtime and space to uneducated herbalists and they misuse it to misinform articulated Nigerians to believe that they are Alternative medicine practitioners “just because of money” and in furtherance use such opportunity to constitute nuisance and health hazards in Nigeria.

In a welcome address, Anambra state Chairman of NACAMA, Dr. Joseph Egejuru said the reception was meant to honuor Dr. Katchy who was the former state Chairman and Secretary of the Association with a view to increase his zeal towards accelerating alternative medicine research, regulation, increase strategy and to actualize and expand the National Health Care Delivery System of Nigeria.

In their separate speeches, Chairman of the occasion Dr. Benjamin Wilkie; Dr. Kunle Aladetuyi, the Secretary General of NACAMA Nigeria; Lagos state Chairman of NACAMA, Dr. Mrs. Tina Mba and Enugu state Chairman of NACAMA, Dr. Morgan Anyaoha praised the beneficiary, Dr. Katchy and urged him to continue with his good works.
